First Squad: 1st Russian Anime Movie!

Russian Anime Movie: First SquadOur Russian friends have finally bit into the Anime craze and have produced their very own full-featured, full length Anime movie. It’s no less than a World War II themed movie to boot which, being a war movie buff myself, is the reason why it is catching my fancy.

The story happens in the year 1942, right in the heat of the Second World War. Russia has been invaded by Germany but the Red Army is putting up a gallant defense despite their forces being inferior to the firepower of the invading army.

The story is centered on a teenager name Nadya who, after getting shell-shocked, awakens a dormant psychic ability of being able to foresee the future. She is able to see into future battles and is able to determine the critical action that must be taken to ensure victory for them.

Naturally, Nadya gets enlisted with the Russian Army’s intelligence division and becomes an integral part of their operations, the most important of which is the fight against an occult order within the German SS called “Ahnenerbe”.

The Ahnenerbe uses supernatural means of summoning the dead’s prince of darkness Baron von Wolff and unleashes him in support of their plans for world domination.

Nadya summons her own army from the beyond — the Pioneers of the First Squad — to help her fend off von Wolff.

Really fascinating stuff and a good treat for Anime movie fans who love diversity and love seeing new perspectives in this amazing art form.

First Squad will be released on October 15 in Russian theaters but will also be premiered in North America at the Fantastic Fest (September 24 – October 1, 2009)! Find out more about this movie at its official site: First Squad (Created by Russian artists Misha Shprits and Aljoscha Klimov and animated by Japanese animation firm Studio 4C)

Anime Movies and the Love for Anime

Welcome to the very first post of animemovielove.com! Anime has come a long way from its origins in the early 1900s. It has transformed into a culture (as opposed to subculture) in itself and has gained a significant following all over the world.

Modern AnimeThe word Anime was derived from the “abbreviated pronunciation” of the Japanese word for “animation” (that is according to Wikipedia) and it encompasses every work of Japanese animation ever since its very first conception during the turn of the 20th century.

The Japanese animation industry or Anime has evolved into a diverse organism and have been incorporated in every form of media— From television to print, Anime has found its way to all aspects of media and story-telling. There are Anime movies shown in almost every genres of fiction: fantasy, horror, comedy, action, sports, and yes, even porn.

Today animation is done mostly through the use of computers but there are still those that do it the old-fashioned hand-drawn way. Japanese animation has developed its own distinct style that sets it apart from its western counterparts.

This distinctive style can be partly attributed to one of Anime’s pioneers known as Osamu Tezuka who started doing animated features in the 1960s. Tezuka pioneered much of the characteristics still seen in the Japanese animation of today but he did so unwittingly because he merely “adapted and simplified many Disney animation techniques (which were popular in his time) to reduce costs and limit the number of frames in productions.” (Source: Wikipedia)

So basically, Tezuka set the style that wonderfully set Anime apart from the rest of the world due to financial concerns.

In future posts, I will be featuring more of Osamu Tezuka and his work that influenced the future of this wonderful works of art.

This blog is dedicated to this art and to all die hard fans out there who live and breath Anime.
